
Im Englischen ist der Gebrauch mancher Präpositionen, wie „before“, relativ einfach, die Verwendung von „in“, „at“ und „on“ hingegen ist nicht ganz so simpel.
Preposition "at" is used for:
- time
- noon / midnight
- night
Example with "at"
- I'll have to leave home at 9 p.m.
- My flight leaves at midnight
- I like flying at night.
Preposition at or on ist used for
- the weekend
- public holidays
Example with "at or on"
- I don't like flying at (BE) / on (AE) Christmas / Easter / the weekend
Preposition "during" is used for:
- the day
Example with "during"
- I never sleep during the day
Preposition "in" is used for:
- part of a day
- longer periods
- happening at the end of a period of time
Example with "in"
- in the morning
- I'm going away in August.
- I'll be finished in half an hour.
- I'm going away in two weeks.
Preposition "on" is used for:
- a particular day
Example with "on"
- I'll see you on Tuesday next week.
No preposition is used for:
- yesterday / next ... / last ... / ...ago / tomorrow / today
Example without preposition
- I'll see you this Tuesday / this weekend.
- I saw him last week / three weeks ago.
